Devonshire Mall strives to be an industry leader in sustainability. The perfect opportunity to improve the property’s corporate social responsibility coincided with the centre’s $70 million redevelopment and food court relocation in 2017/18. Investing in a green building certification such as LEED, we are investing in the betterment of the environment, our customers and our tenants.
LEED® Certification
LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized standard for green buildings with established targets for reduced environmental impact. The LEED® certification is achieved by accumulating “LEED® points”.
There are 57 LEED points available for the Commercial Interiors Rating System in 6 categories:
Sustainable Sites:
Focuses on restoring the sites land and minimizing the impact of the site on the wider environment. For example, exterior lighting not being too bright or offering electric vehicle charging.
Water Efficiency:
Focuses on reducing the amount of potable water used on sites and increasing the amount of non-potable water available. For example, using low-flow faucets and toilets or installing a storm water tank to capture rain water for use indoors.
Energy & Atmosphere:
Focuses on mitigating the image of lighting, heating and cooling in an environment by encouraging the uptake of LEDs and reducing CFC’s in HVAC equipment.
Materials & Resources:
Focuses on encouraging the use of recycling, using recycled and local materials, FSC wood and the mitigating the impact of construction waste.
Indoor Environmental Quality:
Focuses on improving indoor air quality for occupants of a certain space. For example, increasing ventilation or using low emitting materials.
Innovation and Design:
Focuses on implementing innovative building features and sustainable building knowledge. For example, using green cleaning products and implementing tours to share LEED project outputs with the general public.
Devonshire Mall Project Goals:
- Green retro-fit of Devonshire Mall common spaces;
- Educate staff, youth and the general public about green building practices;
- Demonstrate environmental leadership.
We have targeted 35 LEED points to achieve LEED Gold. To achieve these we have included some green design initiatives, such as:
- Offering secure bicycle storage and changing rooms for staff to encourage cycling to work.
- Optimize lighting by installing LED’s.
- Ensuring that 20% of all materials used are manufactured regionally (within 800km).
- Install high efficiency HVAC equipment.
- Use low-emitting materials paints, carpets, wood and adhesives.
- Green education walking tours of Devonshire Mall.
