At Devonshire Mall we believe that a responsible team, determination and a belief in the need to improve not only our immediate environment but our community is important to any sustainability program. Working together to always consider the future.
In 2018, the property underwent an ambitious redevelopment of it’s food court with the aspiration of “zero waste”. Zero waste is defined as reducing waste to landfill, incineration and environment by 90% or more. With a lengthy record of sustainable practices, Devonshire Mall embraced the objective with the understanding that the new food court program would sustain itself well into the future. In addition to the new zero waste food court, Devonshire Mall expanded its sustainable initiatives throughout the centre. The sheer impact of the overall project allowed Devonshire Mall to be an environmental leader within their community.
Food Court Sorting Stations - Striving for Zero Waste
You'll notice no trash bins in our new Food Court! There's a reason for that. Our new food court features two tray stations that sort all of your waste in order to streamline and eliminate landfill waste. It's been designed to manage products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not have it sent to landfills. We've also introduced an organics program where all food waste is being composted in our new on-site compost facility.
Composting - Striving for Zero Waste
We are currently running three 500lb composters that contribute to our zero waste food court. In a 15 hr cycle, they can convert 100lbs of organic waste into 30lbs of compost.

Recycling
Product which flows through Devonshire Mall is carefully examined as to its recyclable potential. As with all shopping centres, the diversity of waste produced on site is akin to handling the waste of a micro city. Household chemicals, biological waste, wooden skids, plastic, cardboard, packaging (non-perishable and consumer), construction waste and batteries are just a few of the products that Devonshire Mall sorts on an ongoing basis. Using local partners, all materials are handled properly and efficiently, ensuring accountability on an annual basis.
A mandatory Retailer Waste Recycling Program was also implemented as an internal recycling program to help streamline the waste collection process through yearly education programs for the tenants.
Working with our centre’s management team, retailers and local community partners, we have had great success in our yearly Recycling Day recycling ewaste, clothing, bikes, various hazardous waste, construction materials, prescription drugs, alkaline batteries, cell phones and more in order to divert materials from landfills. Our recycling efforts demonstrate our commitment to sustainability and green planning and certainly sets the tone for our retailers and our community. Every year, these initiatives help divert a considerable amount of recyclable material from landfill sites.
Energy Efficiency
Devonshire Mall strives to attain higher energy efficiency standards through environmental building control systems, environmentally friendly lighting, efficient heating solutions and solar panels that were installed on our roof.
Environmental Compliance
Through its environmental management program, Devonshire Mall closely monitors environmental compliance in our Centre. We have also strengthened the language in our standard lease document, which outlines tenants’ obligations with regard to environmental legislation.
